Haiti Shelterbox Relief - January 22 & 23

Posted: January 18th, 2010

“Thank You!!”

On Friday January 22nd and Saturday January 23rd in Memorial Peace Park, 224th Street, Maple Ridge, BC we shared.

Photo’s online Click Here!

Joining hands with Haney Rotary and the Kiwanis Club of Golden Ears we raised money for Haiti this weekend, On Friday afternoon we all gathered in Memorial Peace Park, invited local scouts and literally build a Shelter Box Village to show our community and anybody interested, what can be done to help the Haitians, who have lost most everything!

We encouraged everybody to come out and see the Shelterbox tents and many people answered that call, it was absolutely wonderful! All Rotarians available showed interested visitors the tents, all the essentials contained in the Shelter Box and how you can make a tangible difference to the people of Haiti.

People were very generous and we have to date collected almost $40,000 and more donations are still coming in. This means shelter for 400 people, who would otherwise be sleeping outside without any shelter!

A village of 10 tents was set up with scouts and Rotarians sleeping in the tents for 2 nights, sending a strong message to the community to come together and support this project; the emergency in Haiti is of historic magnitude and we must help NOW!

There also was fantastic entertainment and all entertainers donated their service for this cause; there was music, storytelling, drum circle and even a magician. Simple tasty food was provided by the Kiwanis Club and Willowbrook Manor – all by donation.

Special t shirts, even a silent auction and it all added up to a fantastic weekend, lots of fellowship…......and lots of generous donations!

Thanks to all who participated, we couldn’t have done it without any of you!

Local Rotary, Kiwanis and Scouts and other groups will erect a Shelterbox Village of ten tents to help Haitians who have lost everything. Shelterbox is one of the Non-Government Organizations (NGO’s) approved on the CNN website.

A “Shelterbox” (click here for Shelterbox Canada website) is a large container packed with essentials to provide basic housing needs for an extended family of ten. Contents include a large tent, sleeping bags, blankets, water purification and containers, cooking aids and tools. The”Shelterbox Village” along with displays and entertainment will take place on Friday, January 22 and Saturday January 23 in Memorial Peace Park and at the ACT.

“We want you to come out and see the shelters. You will see how you can make a tangible difference to the people of Haiti. Bring your generous spirits, bring a drum for the drum circle on Friday evening and show up.” says Alphonse Seward, the organizer and member of the Meadowridge Rotary club. The Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Arts Council has offered up the Arts Centre and Theatre (ACT) on Saturday, Jan 23 where a wonderful variety of entertainment will be featured in the lobby, theatre and bandstand including: Bruce Coughlan from Tiller’s Folly, Newhouse , Lavalights, Modern Republic, Randy Clarke of the Mojo Stars, James Rogers:http://www.jrband.com, Rick Tippe will emcee along with Gordon Kirkland.

There will even be story-telling and magicians for the kids!

All are welcome to attend by donation. The Kiwanis will provide food and drinks by donation. All donations will be given directly to the ShelterBox program www.shelterbox.org which has provided emergency support for over 800,000 people worldwide since 2000.

“The emergency in Haiti is of a historic magnitude and we must dig deep, change our plans and be in the moment.” Says Dr. Marco Terwiel President of Meadowridge Rotary, and Bonnie Telep President of Haney Rotary says “The need is now and the time to respond is now, and your support is needed now. This is a call to community to come together for the benefit of the people of Haiti.”

Sports Banquet success and a New Hometown Hero

Posted: October 22nd, 2009

The 2009 SPorts Banquet was a hit. Attendance was a bit lower than last year but the participation did not lack and all had a great time.

Our new Hometown Hero, Carmen Eggens, was inducted into the “Hall of Fame”. Her Water Polo exploits are legendary and will no doubt bring her to the Olympics in 2012!

Shannon Wright speaks on Rotary Student Exchange experience

Posted: October 10th, 2009

At our recent ‘Fireside’ Meeting at Heather Hills Golf course we had the pleasure of having our 2008 / 2009 Rotary Student Exchange program participant, Shannon Wright, of Maple Ridge, be our speaker.

It was VERY illuminating. Shannon talked about her challenges in the first months and how the final outcome was great. The things she saw and friendships she made will stay with her for life. A testament to the value of the Rotary Student Exchange program and how even here in Maple Ridge, BC youth can benefit from programs like these. Shannon, like her brothers before her, was obviously a great Ambassador for our club, community and Canada.

Immunization & Breastfeeding Project - We ask for your help

Posted: September 9th, 2009

Our Rotary club – Meadow Ridge Rotary in Maple Ridge – has a special community project we are involved with. We support the local health unit initiatives and clinics on Breastfeeding, and Immunization, including the ‘Booster Fair’ that immunizes children predominantly from disadvantaged homes. At these events we are actively onsite assisting and we also contribute with goods and finances because this is an important benefit to our community. It follows directly from Rotary’s main goal of making our world a better place for all.

Meadow Ridge Rotary supports 'Festival of Wood' and carving project

Posted: February 13th, 2009

A great local project got a small boost from the Meadow Ridge Rotary club and the fruits of that support were more than evident in the fantastic carving done in yellow cedar. The unveiling at Pitt Meadows City Hall on February 12th was very well attended and the dignitaries were out done by
